In light of the recent SCOTUS ruling that same-sex marriages are legal across America unless a state says otherwise, the LGBT community has won a major victory when it comes to how the state (and ultimately society) views them. The group now enjoys the same rights as straight couples have been enjoying over the years in the American heartland. This can mean that LGBT communities’ economic rights and purchasing power are in for a shift, a fact that is not lost on marketers today. Be it digital marketing or traditional marketing, this is one train that’s not to be missed.
When we consider that 6.8% of American adults identify as either gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual, that in itself represents a sizeable chunk of a target demographic. With the Supreme Court ruling, more people who feared being ostracized due to the lack of legal or economic imperatives, will now be able to come out of the closet. This can push the percentage of the American populace that self-identify as LGBT higher, making it all the more relevant for marketing and business professionals to take this segment of the population seriously.
With marriages between same-sex couples poised to rise in the coming days, surely brands and businesses aren’t going to let this opportunity slip them by. There are numerous positive indicators such as a high likelihood of an LGBT couple being employed. The traditional gender roles don’t apply here which means the purchasing power of such couples is generally higher.
These findings and more can be glimpsed at via this infographic below, convincing businesses and brands that the LGBT target demographic will prove to be a windfall for them in the future:
