#ThrowbackThursday: The Rise of Mighty Google

What does Google mean to you? Work savior or a source of entertainment, unrestricted knowledge or an unbiased education!? Most of us find it too good to be true, and therefore, think of it as something untrustworthy or pay heed to foul rumors and so on. No matter what the world says about it, this search engine has now turned from BackRub to a mine of gold.

It is true that there are many questions regarding the authenticity of Google that need to be answered but in which search engine do they not? There are various Google products, such as, the web search engine, operating systems, desktop and mobile applications, Nexus and Google Glass which not all of us are completely familiar with. There are many other services like Google Crisis Response and Google Person Finder which very few even know of. Since 2006, a lot of services have also been terminated either for lack of support or because of integration with another product. Some of the most noteworthy extinctions have been:

  • Google Answers – offered in 2006; died within the same year.
  • Google Click-to-Call – launched in 2007, discontinued in the same year
  • SearchMash – a search engine that was discontinued within the same year in 2008.
  • Audio Ads – it was introduced on May 15, 2007 and discontinued on February 12, 2009.
  • Google Ride Finder – offered in 14 US cities. Ended in October 2009.
  • GOOG-411 – the directory assistance service was concluded in November 2010.
  • Google Buzz – the social networking site was launched on February 9, 2010 and revoke in 2011.
  • Google Pack – it was a collection of apps which was discontinued in 2011.
  • Google Notebook – the online note-taking service was unavailable after July 2012.
  • Picnik – the features got integrated with Google Plus photo manager. The product was turned off after April 19, 2012.
  • Google Reader – the product dearly missed by many ceased working after July 1, 2013.
  • Google Talk – the old Google messenger got replaced with Google Hangouts on May 15, 2013.
  • iGoogle – it was released in May 2005 and was renamed in 2007. It finally retired on November 1, 2013.
  • Orkut – the social networking site shall stop working on September 30, 2014.
  • QuickOffice – no longer available as a standalone app since June 2014, the feature has been fused into Google Drive.
